MURFREESBORO,
Tenn.-Andrew (Drew) Le, a Vietnam-born pianist, performed in the T. Earl
Hinton Music Hall of the Wright Music Building at Middle State Tennessee
University for the MTSU Keyboard Artist Series at 3 p.m. on Nov. 15.
Admission
to Le’s performance was free so anyone could attend. Le was introduced by
Associate Professor of Music Adam Clark. He is also the coordinator of the Keyboard
Artist Series.
Before Le started playing, he paid tribute to
Paris. Le performed “Douze Etudes”, a set of 12 music compositions by Claude
Debussy. The performance lasted for approximately one hour. The audience was
small and varied.
“It was
amazing, outstanding,” said Clark. ”Some of the highest level playing I’ve
heard.”
According
to Le, his first attempts into music did not go as well as he had hoped. At the
age of 7, he hated playing music. He said that he was too stubborn to learn how
to read sheet music. When he was 10 years old, he began to enjoy music after he
understood it. He considers the schooling to be his fondest memories in music.
“Conservatory
training was a wonderful and enjoyable experience,” said Le.
Le
describes his learning process as repetitious. He practices every day, but he feels
that committing to practicing is the most difficult thing about his music
career. Le said that the best thing for him when it comes to performing is to
not think about what he’s playing. He explained that if he thinks about it,
he’s more prone to make mistakes.
To Le,
music allows him to express his emotions. He stressed that not letting loose of
these emotions can lead to problems.
“Music
is essential for my life,” said Le.
Le considers
his children to be his biggest influence. He claimed that the feeling of
watching them grow into human beings is almost indescribable.
Le is
scheduled to perform alongside the violinist Jennifer Walvoord at the Grand
Rapids Art Museum in Michigan on Dec. 13.Later projects include a performance
for the Capitol Area Music Teachers Association on Jan. 12 and another duet
with Walvoord at the First Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan on Jan. 31.The
next participants to perform in the Keyboard Artist Series are Arunesh Nadgir
on Jan. 19 and Adam Clark on March 21.
