MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Despite chilly
temperatures, local music lovers braved the elements to enjoy the show at the
first of 2013’s “Cannonsburgh Annual Concert Series” on April 19 (Friday).
The concert series, which began
three years ago as a way to engage the community with family-friendly
entertainment, takes place on the third Friday of every month from 7-9:30 p.m. April
through October. It is held at the covered pavilion area in the Historic
Cannonsburgh Village area near downtown Murfreesboro.
This year’s first concert event featured a
lengthy set from The Rooted Wings, made up of vocalist and guitarist John
Winters and vocalist Samantha Hawkins.
The Clarksville-based acoustic duo performed a few originals and a
multitude of covers from popular acts such as Lady Antebellum, Jason Mraz,
Creedence Clearwater Revival, and the Dave Matthews Band.
“We tour around the Middle Tennessee area
occasionally, but this is the first time we’ve ever played here
in Cannonsburgh," said Winters. "We’re really looking
forward to coming back this summer when kids and their families will be out of
school and ready to relax.”
The concert series, which is funded by the
Murfreesboro Department of Parks & Recreation, is overseen by Cannonsburgh
Village Program Coordinator Shelia Hodges.
“We love to see the community come out, bring chairs and blankets, and
enjoy the music,” said Hodges. “It’s
really just an all-around enjoyable time, for performers and audiences alike,
and usually acts are very excited to be asked to play. Hopefully, the weather
will be a little more cooperative in the future, but we’re looking forward to
another great show next time.”
The next Concert Series event will take place on
May 17 (Friday). For more information, check the official Cannonsburgh Village
website at http://www.murfreesborotn.gov/default.aspx?ekmenu=126&id=3020. The Rooted
Wings will be returning to Murfreesboro on June 21. They can be reached for
