NASHVILLE, Tenn. – “Catholic
Underground” has come to the Nashville scene with monthly shows from 7-9 p.m.
at downtown's historic St. Mary’s Church at 328 Fifth Ave. N.
Originating in New York City
under the Franciscan Friars of Renewal, CU seeks to reunite culture and beauty
to foster a society of love. People of all faiths and walks of life are
welcomed and encouraged to attend. The church doors are open to all – literally
and figuratively. After experiencing the beauty of the night in one of the 10 host
cities, including two international locations, a group of eight dedicated
organizers formed with the mission of bringing this annual event to Nashville,
Tenn. After a month of preparation, the event debuted, led by popular Christian
artist Audrey Assad.
“Everybody with eyes and ears
can experience the truth, beauty, and goodness of God,” said team leader
Catherine Vendetti.
St. Mary of the Seven Sorrows
Catholic Church is the oldest church in Nashville, currently celebrating 165
years. Built with a Greek Revival style, the old stone building stands strong,
ornate and beautiful. The Sanctuary is large enough to hold a crowd, but small
enough to provide an intimate setting, and the downstairs Crypt is often used
to host events – such as participation in Nashville’s monthly “Art Crawl”.
CU begins the night with a
“Holy Hour” – an hour of praise and worship in the sanctuary. The night then
shifts into a more relaxed setting with a musical performance and refreshments
held in the church’s Crypt. Attendance is free, but donations are gladly
accepted in order to finance equipment and other expenses.
The most recent night, held on
April 13, 2013, featured local Nashville artist Meg Murray. With a unique sound
and positive, upbeat lyrics, Murray successfully met the goal of uniting
culture and beauty. Along with her music, the candlelit room and table setting
added to the coffee shop feel that fostered good conversation.
CU will be
held again on May 11 with music performed by rising artist Maria Miller. The
leadership team is hoping to put out the message of welcome and open doors to
all in the city and beyond. Although the past artists have been Catholic, this
is not a requirement to perform. The name “Catholic Underground” is meant to
refer to the universal nature of Christianity and not exclusively to the
Catholic Church.
“We love
every soul that’s walking on the street and want them to experience the beauty
of joy,” said Vendetti.
